Health and Safety
Environmental, health and safety concerns are intrinsic to our operations and our value propositions. Our objective is that we will do business without harming people or the environment.
In order to achieve best-in-class health and safety performance, we believe it is necessary to set specific goals and constantly measure progress toward these goals through close observation and reporting.
Invensys utilizes several standard health and safety metrics and as well as a unique Safety Awareness Metric (SAM) to monitor our performance
Health and Safety (EHS) Metrics
Our key Health and Safety Metrics are:
- Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRCIR)
- Lost Workday Case Incident Rate (LWCIR)
All Invensys locations worldwide gather and report these metrics on a monthly basis. Our Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and Board receive monthly reports on these metrics in order to review our safety performance. Below is a summary of our performance.
|
FY05/06 |
FY06/07 |
FY07/08 |
TRCIR |
1.01 |
0.74 |
0.56 |
LWCIR |
0.44 |
0.35 |
0.22 |
We calculate our TRCIR and LWCIR according to United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, using the formula:
TRCIR
or LWCIR =
(N/EH) X 200,000
where:
- N = Sum of the number of recordable non-fatal injuries and illnesses in a year (for TRCIR) or the number of cases that result in a lost work day (for LWCIR),
- EH = total number of hours worked by all employees in one year
- 200,000 = equivalent of 100 full-time workers working 40-hour weeks, 50 weeks per year.
The reported figures for TRCIR and LWCIR are a twelve month moving average in order to reflect long term trends rather than monthly fluctuations.
We are happy to report no work-related fatalities over the last three years. (Click chart to enlarge)
Safety Awareness Metric (SAM)
In 2007, Invensys introduced the SAM to our major operating locations. The SAM is an aggregate measurement of proactive EHS activities conducted at operational locations and across the businesses. The SAM consists of the four elements:
- Number of Overdue Actions – This is a measure of how effectively management at the site is correcting identified issues and if they are doing so in a timely manner. Actions are generated from EHS activities including: Loss Prevention Audits, EHS Compliance Audits, Phase I/II due diligence assessments, Regulatory Agency Site Inspections, Incident Investigations, and Near Miss investigations.
- Number of Near Misses – Near Misses are those incidents where the action resulted in non-injury or first aid only, and no personal property damage, but under different circumstances, could have resulted in personal injury or personal property damage. Near misses also include a situation that may have resulted in an incident if not identified and corrected, such as observations of poor behavior, unsafe situations and suggestions from employees of something unsafe.
- Number of Safety Tours - Sites are required to conduct self-assessments of their EHS programs and Safety Tours of processes at a frequency appropriate to their operational complexity, risk profile, and governing standards and requirements. Safety Tours are conducted by site personnel, site management and business senior management.
- Employee Training – This is a measure of how well management at the site is supporting key EHS training initiatives such as EHS Induction training, Sustainability Awareness training and EHS Code of Conduct training.
All major Invensys sites (manufacturing, distribution, staging, engineering and office) worldwide with more than 50 employees gather and report these metrics on a monthly basis. The performance targets for each of the elements are set annually based on the number of hours worked at the site and the site’s risk profile.
Our Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and Board receive monthly reports on these metrics in order to review our safety performance. Each SAM element is weighted appropriately and the data is aggregated by business on a 100 point scale. The annual SAM target is 85 out of 100.
