Posted 31 July 2006Donald Labbe of Invensys presented 2006 ISA Power Industry Division
Achievement Award
Award recognizes outstanding contributions to automation in the electric power
generation industry
Donald E. Labbe, P.E., of Invensys Process Systems has been presented the 2006
ISA POWID Achievement Award at the 16th Annual Joint ISA Power Industry
Division/EPRI Controls and Instrumentation Conference. This is the highest award
of the Power Industry Division (POWID), a group within the Instrumentation,
Systems, and Automation Society (ISA). The conference, co-sponsored since 1991
by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), is regarded as the key
automation forum in the power industry.
The POWID award recognizes individuals for their outstanding achievement,
original design application and special contributions toward the development of
engineering concepts in the field of automation for the advancement of electric
power generation.
Mr. Labbe is consulting control engineer for advanced process control at
Invensys Process Systems and is based in Foxboro, Massachusetts. His controls
and instrumentation experience spans 32 years in coal-, oil-, gas- and
nuclear-based power plant automation design and implementation, and he holds
four patents that contribute to cleaner and more efficient power plant
operation. He has authored or collaborated more than 30 technical papers and
articles for electric generation plant automation and related fields. Mr. Labbe
is an expert specializing in the application, design and implementation of model
predictive control (MPC) and non-linear based controls for coal-, oil-, and
gas-fired power plant boilers. His advanced control techniques are implemented
in Invensys products and customer projects for fossil power plants in the United
States and internationally.
Mr. Labbe was awarded ISA Fellow in 2005, one of that organization’s highest
honors. His work in advanced control has also earned him the ISA’s E.G. Bailey
award. He has served as the technical paper review coordinator for the ISA Power
Industry Division.
A Registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Mr.
Labbe holds a Masters’ Degree in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. He received his Bachelors’ Degree in Nuclear
Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.
About the ISA Power Industry Division
The Power Industry Division (POWID) is organized within the Industry and
Sciences Department of ISA. Its goal is to provide a means for information
exchange among engineers, scientists, technicians, students/universities and
management involved in instrumentation and control automation relating to the
production of electricity. Since 1991, POWID has been jointly programming the
annual ISA POWID/EPRI Controls and Instrumentation Conference with the Electric
Power Research Institute (EPRI). POWID is active with developing standards,
conducting technical training as well as providing awards to power plants and
individuals advancing instrumentation and control within the power industry.

About the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), with major locations in Palo Alto,
California, and Charlotte, North Carolina, was established in 1973 as an
independent, nonprofit center for public interest energy and environmental
research. EPRI brings together members, participants, the Institute's scientists
and engineers, and other leading experts to work collaboratively on solutions to
the challenges of electric power. These solutions span nearly every area of
electricity generation, delivery, and use, including health, safety, and
environment. EPRI's members represent over 90 percent of the electricity
generated in the United States. International participation represents nearly 15
percent of EPRI's total research, development, and demonstration program. More
information is available at www.epri.com.
