The City of Burlington selects the Avantis solution from Invensys for asset maintenance management

Posted 04 January 2005

Avantis solution will provide city staff with the tools to help manage the city’s many roadways, buildings, and parks through the various stages of the asset’s life cycle – planning, acquisition, operation & maintenance, and replacement

BURLINGTON, ONTARIO – January 4, 2006 – The Avantis unit of Invensys Process Systems has been selected by the City of Burlington to implement the Avantis (www.avantis.net) enterprise asset management solution for asset maintenance management in several city departments.

Among the departments to initially use the Avantis solution will be Roads and Parks Maintenance and Parks and Recreation. These two departments are responsible for maintaining the majority of the city’s buildings and facilities, 1,600 lane kilometres (992 lane miles) of roadways, more than 700 kilometres (434 miles) of sidewalks and pathways, 570 hectares (1,408 acres) of parklands, along with a wide-ranging list of other city-owned assets including 13,000 streetlights and 16,000 storm drain catch basins. Using the planning, scheduling, tracking and reporting capabilities of the Avantis system, the city anticipates more efficient and effective maintenance, and lower cost of ownership.

"Avantis will support a number of the city's operational and financial goals,” said Bob Carrington, Burlington's general manager of Community Services. “This software will assist us in the maintenance of over a billion dollars worth of public assets. Improved means of identifying, recording, and tracking issues will give us a better understanding of priority needs, help us make the most of the resources available to us, and assist us in being more responsive to our citizens. Avantis will also provide information to better plan for the ongoing renewal of the city's ageing infrastructure."

In addition to its other strengths, the Avantis solution supports the development of preventive maintenance strategies and plans that will facilitate a more proactive approach to asset maintenance. The new system will also provide the functionality and information needed to ensure compliance with evolving safety, environmental and governmental regulations.

“Municipalities are unique in that they have so many different kinds of assets to manage, and have comparatively limited resources to get the job done,” said Neil Cooper, general manager of the Avantis unit of Invensys Process Systems. “The flexibility of the Avantis solution is an ideal complement to the wide diversity of assets and projects that the City of Burlington needs to manage and maintain. The versatile and robust database will allow comprehensive information collection and analysis, which will help the city get the most out of its infrastructure. We are pleased to be working with the City of Burlington and supporting their needs on this project.”

Invensys will also provide a variety of services to the project, including assistance with the Avantis implementation, and integration with the city’s existing applications including the payroll system, financial accounting system, and geographical information system (GIS). The project is expected to be completed in fall 2006.
