Invensys delivers advanced operator training simulator to BP Zhuhai for PTA expansion project

Invensys Process Systems China recently delivered a fully-engineered DYNSIM-based operator training simulator (OTS) to BP Zhuhai (BPZ) for the No. 2 PTA (purified terephthalic acid) plant project. The 900,000 ton per year plant is located in Zhuhai, in the Guangdong province of China.

"The Invensys OTS project, the first cooperative effort of its kind between BP Zhuhai and Invensys, was completed on schedule in a high-quality manner and fully meets our demanding operator training requirements. We look forward to future cooperative projects with Invensys, said Mr. Guo Zengshan, OTS project manager for the BPZ No. 2 Project.

The Invensys OTS for BPZ was built using advanced DYNSIM dynamic simulation technology from SimSci-Esscor. The DYNSIM program applies first-principles chemical engineering modeling techniques and rigorous thermodynamic data to provide detailed unit operation process modeling coupled with an exact control replication to deliver state-of-the-art OTS functionality and accuracy. The flexibility of the DYNSIM solution is made possible by SimSci-Esscor's SIM4ME architecture, which integrates process simulation, controls simulation and equipment simulation within an open and scalable architecture. The Invensys OTS delivered to BPZ includes interfaces to the distributed control system (DCS) and safety integrated system (SIS) simulations to provide a safe, effective, and comprehensive training environment for plant operators.

"We've worked with other OTS vendors in the past," said Mr. Patrick McLoughlin, BPZ No. 2 PTA project director. "Invensys has proven that they can deliver OTS systems to users on time and in compliance with the quality requirements."

About BP Zhuhai

BP Zhuhai Chemical Co. Ltd. (BPZ) is located in Zhuhai, in the Guangdong province of China. Zhuhai is next to Macau and approximately 35 km across the mouth of the Pearl River from Hong Kong. BPZ was the first Sino-foreign joint venture producing and selling PTA product in China owned by BP (85%) and the Fu Hua Group (15%).

Annual PTA production capacity is 600,000 tons for the No.1 unit and 900,000 tons for the newly built No. 2 unit. BPZ employs 200 permanent staff and around 150 contractors. BPZ is leading China's PTA market, in particular in polyester fabrics and textiles.
